In the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) terms, Yunnan Baiyao stops bleeding, disperses blood stasis, activates blood circulation, alleviates pain, clears away toxins, and reduces swelling.† In studies, Yunnan Baiyao is shown to shorten the bleeding time and clotting time.

    Yunnan Baiyao is commonly used to extend the life of dogs with bleeding cancers such as hemangiosarcoma. Some treatments for cancer, such as Chemotherapy, tend to promote bleeding; it makes sense that giving a supplement to promote blood clotting would be a benefit.

    It is believed that Yunnan Baiyao works by activating the platelets, which are the small blood components that help make blood clot.  Blood clots are the first step in a scab.  They are like little plugs or corks in the way they stop hemorrhage.

    Doctors in China also let patients take Yunnan Baiyao before surgeries (0 to 5 days) because studies show that Yunnan Baiyao can reduce the amount of bleeding during operation. When applied after operation, Yunnan Baiyao may promote healing from the wound.

    Yunnan Baiyao should be used only after consultation and in cooperation with your dog’s veterinarian.  

    How much to give? These are general guidelines:
      • For dogs under 10 lbs, give 1 capsule by mouth one time a day.
      • For dogs from 10 to 30 lbs, give 1 capsule by mouth two times a day.
      • For dogs above 30 but less than 60 lbs, give 2 capsules two times a day.
      • For dogs above 60 lbs, give 2 capsules three times a day.

    • Do not give Yunnan Baiyao on an ongoing basis.  It is best to give it on alternating days, or for a 5-day on, 5-day off cycle that repeats.  There is some possible evidence that this medicine may elevate liver markers if given daily for prolonged periods of time.

    Precaution
    1.  Do not take Yunnan Baiyao if allergic to it.
    2.  If conditions do not improve or even get worsen after 3 days, discontinue it.
    3.  Not suitable for those with severe irregular heartbeat.
    4.  For best results, avoid consuming fish, beef, lamb, beans, and cold food at the same time.
